What renting a boat on Skiathos looks like

Boat rental in Skiathos follows a simple idea: you take a small motorboat for a few hours or a whole day and pick your own coves, swims and lunch spot. The municipality writes that the beach at Koukounaries offers the option to rent a boat alongside its many water sports.1 It also presents the island as a base for holidays on a boat, from single days out to whole weeks among the Sporades.2

On GetYourGuide the rental side of Skiathos is small: a pair of self-drive listings from George boat rental skiathos, plus skippered boats from Skiathos Boats and from Prive Boat Rentals & Cruises. That short list maps the real choice well. Either you take the helm yourself after a briefing, or you hand it to a local who knows where the water stays calm and which coves fill up first.

Whichever you choose, the day follows the same rhythm. You meet the boat at the harbor, get a run through the controls and the safety gear, then head out with a short plan and a handful of possible stops. Keep that plan modest. A calm morning spent at a couple of good coves beats a long list of places rushed through while the wind is rising behind you and the fuel gauge is dropping.

The license-free day boat

George boat rental skiathos sells a 6-hour rental of a boat you drive without a license. Its listing names the boat as a Poseidon Blue Water 185 with a 30-60 hp Yamaha engine, and says you collect it from the old port or from Small Banana, depending on where it is serving that day. The instructor speaks Greek and English. Ask for the briefing in whichever of those languages you follow best, and ask again about anything that is unclear.

The listing includes the boat with its safety equipment, named as life jackets, a fire extinguisher and lights, plus fuel for a set duration or mileage depending on the agreement, and instructions on using the boat safely. Ask before you sign how much fuel your agreement covers and what happens if you go beyond it. That single line decides how far you can sensibly roam in a day.

It starts from $462 and is rated 5.00 from a single review, far too few to judge by. Treat Skiathos boat rental prices like any other rental: compare what the fuel, the hours and the equipment cover, not only the headline figure. Plans can still change: the booking is refundable until a day ahead, and payment can wait until later. Book early in summer and keep the date flexible enough to dodge a windy day.

A sunset boat you skipper yourself

The same company offers a private sunset rental that it calls license free: the listing states that no boating license is required and that the boat suits beginners. It lasts 3 hours and starts at the Old Port of Skiathos, opposite GinFish Restaurant. It turns an evening into your own small voyage rather than a seat on a shared cruise, with nobody else's playlist playing on deck.

Included are the private boat rental, a safety and navigation briefing, drinks and refreshments, and fuel; food and personal expenses are not. The listing also says it is not suitable for non-swimmers or for people prone to seasickness. Bring a snack, a warm layer for the ride back in the dark and a phone in a dry pouch, and settle on a firm return time before you cast off from the quay.

The sunset rental has no reviews yet, and it starts from $501. If Skiathos boat hire with no license is what you are after, these George listings are the ones that state it plainly in their name or their terms. Book the evening early in your stay, and you keep the option of a second try if the first night turns out windy. A free cancellation window makes that switch easy.

Boat rental: (no licence needed) the do’s and don’ts | Skiathos, Greece, with grboatrentals

Nothing from YouTube loads on this page until you press play.

What the listings do not say about the rules

The rental listings state that their boats need no license, but they do not quote the Greek rule behind that, such as a limit on engine power. Ask the renter which rule applies to the exact boat you will drive, how old the driver has to be and which documents to carry on board. Get the answer in writing, by message or email, before you pay anything at all, and keep it on your phone for the day.

Some limits are clear from official pages. Across the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades, fires, free camping and spearfishing are not allowed, and entering Zone A needs a special permit from the management body.1617 Visit Greece adds that the islet of Piperi is fully protected and closed to visitors.18 Keep these rules in mind if a longer run east ever tempts you on a calm day.

Closer to home, the municipality says Lalaria can be reached only by sea and only in dead calm, and that taking its cobbles is strictly forbidden.1119 Visit Greece adds that landing there is controlled.12 On a rented boat that means checking the sea before you set a course for the north coast, and staying off the beach if the renter at the quay advises you to. A view of the white cliffs from the water is still worth the trip.

Hiring a skipper instead

If driving is not your idea of a holiday, a skippered boat does the work for you. Skiathos Boats runs a private tour on an 8-meter JOKER rib with a 300hp engine and an experienced skipper, for 4 hours, with pickup included. Its route gives Lalaria 45 minutes, the Blue and Dark Cave 30 minutes, a 30-minute photo stop at the Byzantine Castle of Skiathos and 30 minutes at Tsougrias beach.

Drinks, beach towels, snorkels and a sound system come with it, while meals do not, and the listing mentions both half-day and full-day choices. It starts from $183 and is rated 5.00 from 2 reviews. For a first look at the north coast, a skipper who reads the wind can be worth more than the freedom of the wheel, especially with children aboard and no experience of local currents.

Prive Boat Rentals & Cruises sells a 4-hour speedboat day limited to 9 participants, with a guide who speaks English, Spanish and Greek. Its plan lists a 30-minute swim, 1.5 hours at Lalaria, 1 hour at Kastro Beach and an hour at Tsougria with the sunset, and it includes pickup from a beach hotel or villa, plus towels. A taverna lunch stop is not included, and the price starts from $312.

Where a small boat can take you

The municipality's sailing page lists what a boat from Skiathos can reach: Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros, and also about 20 rocky islets or small islands such as Arkos, Peristera and Tsougrias.2 For a rental of a few hours, the nearest of them are the realistic goals for a relaxed day. Tsougria lies less than 2 nautical miles off the port, with pines, olive trees and two small lakes.3

Wind decides the rest of the plan. The municipality notes that the north-coast beaches are wilder, with waves that suit windsurfing, while the southern ones have calm water.20 The management body of the marine park writes that the meltemi, very strong north winds, blow in August.21 On a breezy day keep to the southern shore of the island, and save the north coast for a still morning.

Sunsets reward a late rental. Visit Greece names Agia Eleni beach as well known for its sunsets, and Bourtzi, by the harbor, as one of the most photogenic sunset views on the island.1422 Bring the boat back before dark unless your renter has agreed otherwise, and settle the return time in writing before you leave the quay, together with a number to call if you are running late or the engine stops.

Before you sign for the boat

Read each listing's included items carefully, line by line. The day rental names fuel for a set duration or mileage, the sunset rental names fuel plainly, the rib lists drinks, towels and snorkels, and the guided speedboat lists pickup and towels. None of these lists names lunch or snacks, so pack food and water, or plan a stop ashore at a beach taverna with some cash in your pocket.

On the quay, ask for a walk round the boat: life jackets for everyone, the fire extinguisher, the lights, the anchor and how to reach the renter if the engine coughs. Photograph the hull before you leave, note how much fuel is in the tank, and save the renter's number twice. A short check at the start spares an argument at the end of a good day, and it costs you nothing but a few minutes of patience on the quay.

All four listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and all of them let you reserve now and pay later. Use that window well. Book for the calmest-looking day of your stay, check the forecast the evening before, and move the date if the north wind is up rather than heading out into a choppy sea. A rental boat is small, and a flat sea is what makes the day easy and safe for everyone aboard, beginners above all.

You ask,we answer.

Do I need a license to drive these boats?

Not for the ones that say so. The sunset listing states that no boating license is required; ask the renter which rule applies to your boat.

What engine does the license-free boat have?

A 30-60 hp Yamaha. The listing names a Poseidon Blue Water 185 fitted with that engine.

Is fuel included?

Yes, within limits. The 6-hour rental covers fuel for a set duration or mileage, depending on the agreement.

Where do I collect the boat?

At the harbor. The old port or Small Banana for the day rental; the Old Port, opposite GinFish Restaurant, for the sunset boat.

Can a skipper drive for us?

Yes. Skiathos Boats runs its JOKER rib with an experienced skipper for 4 hours.

Is the sunset rental fine for non-swimmers?

No. Its listing rules out both non-swimmers and anyone prone to seasickness on the water.

Can I cancel a rental?

Yes, up to 24 hours before. All four listings on this page refund you in full until then, and you can pay later.
