Sea kayaking on Skiathos, with a mask and fins
Paddle the quiet south coast with a guide, slip into the water with a mask, or let a sailing boat carry the gear to coves you could not reach on foot. Here is how to get into the sea around Skiathos, not just onto it.

Why paddle the south coast
Sea kayaking on Skiathos makes the most sense on the south side of the island. The municipality describes the northern beaches as less organized and wild, with waves that suit windsurfing, while the southern ones are more organized and have calm water suited to families.1 That calm is exactly what a beginner in a kayak wants.
The guided tour sold on this page starts from the Skiathos Supway office on Sklithri Beach and follows the south coast, with time to swim and snorkel along the way. You do not need any experience: kayaking lessons and a safety briefing are part of the outing, and the guide sets the pace for the group.
Paddling low on the water changes how the coast looks. Rocks that seem small from a cruise boat turn into walls, pine roots hang over pale stone, and you notice the color of the water shift as the seabed moves from sand to weed. A kayak also reaches the narrow gaps where larger boats cannot go, which is where the best snorkeling usually waits.

What the guided kayak tour includes
The listing names a local guide, kayaking lessons, the kayak and paddles, a lifejacket, a waterproof bag, a sea mask, snorkeling and photos of the outing. It lasts 2 hours and the group is limited to 10 participants, with the guide speaking English and Greek. It starts from $58 and is rated 4.90 from 92 reviews.
The booking terms are relaxed. A cancellation costs nothing until a day ahead, and the place can be held now with payment later. The one condition the operator stresses is flexibility: everything depends on the sea on the day, so be ready to move your tour to another day or another hour if the wind picks up.
In the listing's score breakdown the guide earns 4.9 and the price-to-value rating 4.7. Those are good signs for a small-group outing where the guide's patience matters more than the boat. Book early in your stay, so that a windy morning still leaves room to try again before you fly home.

Snorkeling from a sailing boat
If you would rather swim than paddle, a sailing day brings the gear to you. Aeolus Sailing's full day lists snorkeling, flippers and a paddleboard among its inclusions, with a lunch cooked on board. Its named stops include Tsougria, Kastani Beach and the Dasia sea caves when the sea allows. It starts from $162 and lasts 7 hours.
Sporades Sailing hands out masks, snorkels, fins and a stand-up paddleboard, and its possible stops include Dasia, Arkos and Tsougria. The 55-foot yacht run by Waterandsnow carries masks, fins and a paddleboard for a small group of 12 to 13 people. These are full days with food, so they cost more than the kayak tour, but they cover far more coast.
The difference is mainly control. On a kayak you choose the next rock with your guide; on a sailing boat the captain chooses the bay and you choose how long to float. One good plan is to do both: a short paddle early in the week to learn the coast, then a sailing day to see the islets offshore.

The islets and coves worth a mask
Tsougria is the first islet most boats visit. It lies east of the southern tip of Skiathos, less than 2 nautical miles from the port, and the municipality describes pines, olive trees and two small lakes on it.3 The cruise that goes there gives you 50 minutes of swimming at Tsougria Beach at the end of the day.
Around Skiathos the rocks hold more than sand. Visit Greece notes that fish and tsoflia, crayfish and lobsters, are caught around the rocky islets such as Tsougria and Kastro.4 The municipality's diving page points to reefs, shipwrecks and caves with experienced instructors, which is the next step if snorkeling leaves you wanting more depth.2
On the north coast a private speedboat enters the Dark Cave and the Blue Cave, something a kayak from the south side will not reach. The municipality's sailing page also names a dip in the Blue Cave as one of the pleasures of a boat holiday from Skiathos.5 Save the caves for a calm day, when the swell is gentle at their mouths, and bring a light rash top: the shade inside a cave cools you faster than you expect after an hour in the sun.
Water sports on the beaches
Not every swim needs a boat. The municipality counts 15 ski schools on Skiathos.6 For a first taste of the sea on your own terms, a beach rental close to the sand is a gentle place to begin. Koukounaries on the south-west point offers every kind of water sport, the option to rent a boat and scuba diving.7
Koukounaries also sits inside a protected landscape. Behind its pine forest lies Strofylia lagoon, part of the Natura 2000 network, and the area called Koukounaries and wider marine region covers 88 hectares.89 Paddle and swim there with the same care you would show any nature reserve: no anchors on sea grass, nothing taken home.
For a family, a beach rental is often enough for a first try. A short paddle within sight of the sand teaches balance and builds confidence. Then, if the children enjoy it, the guided tour from Sklithri gives them a real stretch of coast with a lifejacket, a guide and photos to keep.
Rules at sea in the marine park
If your snorkeling takes you east on a boat day, you enter different waters. Alonissos and east Skopelos are part of the National Marine Park, according to the municipality of Skiathos.10 Inside the whole park, fires, free camping and spearfishing are not allowed, according to its management body.11
The park exists for the animals in it. Visit Greece lists sea caves, dolphins, seabirds, Caretta caretta turtles and the Mediterranean monk seal among what lives there.12 Keep your distance from any seal you might glimpse, never feed fish, and leave shells and stones where they lie.
Around Skiathos itself the same habits apply even where no park rule is written. Lalaria, a beach reached only from the sea, forbids taking its white cobbles away.1314 A reef-safe sun cream, a rubbish bag in the kayak hatch and quiet voices near nesting birds are small things that keep these coves worth visiting.
How to pick your day in the water
Start with your comfort in the sea. Weak swimmers do best on the guided kayak tour, with a lifejacket and a guide close by, or on a boat day where they can stay on deck. Some boat listings say plainly that they are not suitable for non-swimmers, so read that line before booking.
Then think about time. A 2-hour paddle fits around a beach day or a late lunch in town. A sailing day fills 7 hours or more and turns the snorkeling into one part of a long, slow outing. A cruise to Lalaria, Kastro and Tsougria fills 7 to 8 hours with stops at all three.
Finally, watch the wind. Every one of these outings depends on the sea, and the operators reserve the right to change or move a trip on a rough day. Book early in your stay, keep a spare morning, and you will almost always find a calm window to get into the water.
